Archer Closes FAA Phase 3 First, Then Moves on Boeing's Wisk: Consolidation Reshapes the UAM Race
Archer Aviation became the first eVTOL manufacturer to have 100 percent of its Means of Compliance accepted by the FAA, and in May 2026 it closed Phase 3 of the agency's four-stage type-certification framework for its Midnight aircraft — a structural prerequisite for the final stage, where engineering claims are physically tested against agreed standards. Archer is the official air taxi provider for the 2028 LA Olympics and holds a US$1.5 billion aircraft purchase agreement with United Airlines, with launch operations preparing in Abu Dhabi.
The competitive landscape shifted again in August 2026, when Archer signed a definitive all-stock agreement to acquire Boeing's Wisk Aero, SkyGrid and Insitu subsidiaries. Boeing takes an equity stake of nearly 20 percent and a board seat, while retaining access to Wisk's autonomous flight technology through cross-licensing. The deal concentrates certification experience, autonomy intellectual property and defence-adjacent capability inside one airframer — a signal that UAM is consolidating around a small group of manufacturers with credible 2026–2028 commercial pathways.
